The Extreme Weather of Kansas


You may know that Kansas is famous for tornado and extreme weather, Let’s take a look at some different extreme weather events from the 1950’s to today.

Flood of 1951

The great flood of 1951 which killed 24 people and mostly affected all area river basins. The flood caused thousands to abandon their homes and damage costs in 1951 was 760 million dollars. Which today would be over 5 billion dollars.

The 1974 Emporia Tornado

In 1974 on June 8th, a tornado hit Emporia and killed 6 people and injured 200. The tornado was rated an F4 on the Fujita Tornado Intensity scale and just demolished most of Emporia Kansas. The damage in Lyon county was massive and the cost to repair was estimated at $25 million to repair.

1991 Andover Tornado

Known as the Andover Tornado of Wichita Kansas, this F-5 tornado with it’s massive size just tore up everything in its path. It made its direct hit on McConnell Air Force Base and a total of 13 people were killed.

As a result, many of the severe storms were tornados but many other things like floods, blizzards, and droughts have occurred in the past 100 years.
