When you come to Kansas you can tell by the names of our cities, rivers, counties, and our state that we are very proud to be a state where many native tribes have lived. Since multiple Native American tribes were based in Kansas it is hard to say which Native American tribe is the main owner of Kansas. The Kansa, Kiowa, Osage, Pawnee, and Wichita could lay claim to be the main tribes that Kansas belonged to.

The Native American tribe Kiowa were the tribe that took up most of Kansas’ land. The “Kiowa Apache” were direct descendants from the Kiowa. Although the Kiowa Apache were mostly located in Oklahoma they were a very big tribe that would trade and travel together. The Kiowa would move around as many Native American tribes would but when the Kiowa and the Comanche formed a confederation they soon stopped moving around and lived in peace. After the peace was formed with the Comanche and the Kiowa, the Kiowa settled in between the Red and Arkansas rivers. "Native American Tribes of Kansas."

The Kansa tribe are related to the Osage and Quapaw but they got split up during their migration along the Missouri River. The Kansa still stuck together and traveled along the Kansas River until they found themselves around the Council Grove area and decided to settle there. The Kansa took up the upper north-east and got into lots of fights with the Cheyenne, Pawnee, Kiowa, and Sauk. The Kansa had over two million acres, but in the 1840’s the Kansa were moved down to around were the Osage tribe were by the United States because they signed over some land. The Osage was a Native American tribe that was originally based throughout Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arkansas. The Osage tribe still has a tribal council to this day. In Kansas there is an Osage City, Osage County, and even school named after the Osage Indians. The Osage are related to the Kansa and they moved to Kansas around the same time. The Osage would commonly trade between the Native American tribes in Oklahoma and Texas. The Osage tribe was south of the Kansa tribe. Osage Indians
