There are many dark spots in American history for example slavery, the fight for civil rights, women not being able to vote until the 20th century, and the japanese internment. One of the most darkest parts in American history is the Indian Removal act.
What is the Indian Removal Act? The Indian Removal act was a law that was made by the U.S Congress and signed by president Andrew Jackson on May, 28th 1830. The Indian Removal Act was when the government decided that they wanted to expand the southeast part of the united states in past years the United States government and the Native Americans had problems because of their differences. The Indian Removal Act would force the Native Americans from the southeast of the United States to the middle of the United States. This included Kansas and Oklahoma. Some of the tribes that were forced to move were the Chippewa, Peoria, Kaskaskia, Wea, and the Pottawatomie. Some civilized tribes were the choctaw, the chickasaw, the Cherokee, the Creek, and the Seminole. All Native Americans were moved to west of the Mississippi River.
What is a “Indian Reservation”? “According to http://usdakotawar.org/history/newcomers-us-government-military-federal-acts-assimilation-policies/what-reservation” A reservation is pretty much a guaranteed piece of land set aside for native americans federal agents cannot force laws in these reservations. There are four Native American reservations in Kansas today. These reservations are the Ioway, kickapoo, Prairie, and the Sac and fox. If your parents are part of the cherokee tribe then you will be able to go into that reservation as long as you are cherokee. You have to be pottawatomie to go into that tribe. existing in kansas today.
The Trail of Tears is the trail that many of Native Americans had followed in order to get to kansas and oklahoma the reason why this trail was named Trail of Tears is because more than 4,000 people died being forced to move.
The reason why this is such a sad and depressing part in American history is that those Native Americans had their homes there and had planned on being there for the rest of their life. Think of it as this if you were just getting up and going to school then all of a sudden a big cloud of dust comes up and then it all starts the Americans are coming with whips and guns. They tell of you to start walking there's hundreds of them everywhere all you could see was the horses. Now think about it more that would be horrifying wouldnt it.
